A Phone for the Blind by K-NFB Reading Technology

Reading machines have been around for years, but because of the size of this device it's a revolution for seniors with macular degneration and other vision problems. This new device is the smallest text to speech device every built. The phone lets you take a picture of a piece of text, and then the phone reads back what the text says. The product was released by K-NFB Reading Technology. There are thousands of everyday uses for this, but the best ones I could think of are:

  • Reading a phone numbers from an address book.
  • Learning what a menu says in a restaurant.
  • Finding out what the ingredients are on food and medicine packages.
  • Reading mail.

This is really exciting technology for seniors and anyone with problems seeing. Right now the technology is in it's newest stages, and isn't quite ready for broad adoption, but it will get better.
